FIVE FOLD SPIRITUAL GIFTS

The necessity of Spiritual Gifts

The necessity of spiritual gifts

Here’s my approach for our teaching series.

I call it the “pathway.”

We’ll start with “Why,” which starts by looking at the patterns.

Then we explore the problems that emerge from certain ways of thinking and acting.

Then we pierce into issue to understand what’s underlying this problem at the deeper level.

Then we’ll go into the section on “What” which is prophecy.

“Prophecy” is what Scripture says on the topic.

Then we’ll peel back what how to apply God’s word.

Then we’ll look at the how we’re trying to address the patterns by sharing the pathway: the actual steps that we can take, guided by Scripture and by God.

The “what if” section covers the pit stops. Those are potential challenges or questions you may encounter along the path and maybe get in your way.

Pitstops could be either good things where you need some guidance or clarification. They may be actual resistance that we need to identify and address how to go around or push through.

Finally, we discuss pursuit, which are actual steps you need to do right now.

Patterns They may be you feel like you’re in a rut when it comes to spiritual gifts.

So you’re aware of their existence, but you’re nothing seems to come about.

The challenge might be more fundamental.

You’re not thinking about them. Not living in them. Not seeking them in an active way.

“Spiritual gifts” simply are a concept.

Another pattern is looking within yourselves to understand and validate what are your spiritual gifts.

There’s a problem that emerges when we stay in those patterns.

A flat spiritual life.

Feeling that something is missing.

Life is not as rounded out as it could be.

Your spiritual gifts give you those notes and those flavors that you can layer in and appreciate.

Here’s the deeper problem: you have a thin relationship with Christ.

The spiritual gifts are a lens through which we can know Christ because He is all five of these. How we relate to him is impacted if we don’t have a deeper appreciation for the gifts.

It’s similar to only knowing your spouse as the person at work or as person who exercises with you.

You have this one sided view. And as a result, it’s also a thin relationship.

What are the underlying causes for having this limited view or activity with your spiritual gifts?

One of those causes is doubting spiritual gifts themselves.

You could doubt because there’s been bad teaching in the past.

Or there’s fear of abuse.

And so as a result there’s an understandable doubt.

A lot of people wonder whether there are spiritual gifts at all. Some don’t really know what the different gifts really mean.

There will be many people who are interested but they don’t make spiritual gifts a priority.

And it’s sort of understandable: the teaching you received has been poor, you won’t see the urgency and importance of the gifts.

So let’s take a look at Scripture:

Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. (1 Corinthians 12:1)
Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives–especially the ability to prophesy. (1Corinthians 14:1)

The verse is clear that we’re all called to be informed.

We should also have this desire.

And then the part about the ability to “prophesy” is that in this primary it’s one primary aspect is communicating God’s word and that is its foundation in Scripture.

What are the steps that we can actually begin to take?

I find taking an active engagement with the relevant Scriptures is always a good step.

Next is beginning to ask ourselves, “How does the Word shape or inform our purpose?”

What is your desire?

Remember one of our goals is for you to get clarity. Once you have clarity, to live it out.

What are common bumps to the process?

The first is it can be easy to get distracted.

Learning the deeper things requires a different environment, one where won’t get distracted.

The second common stumbling block is being discouraged.

I think the biggest discouragement comes from searching within ourself or at other people to discover your purpose. Because that’s not where we can find it, you will experience huge discouragement.

What are the next steps?

The first is to schedule time.

Treat your exploration and study of spiritual gifts you taking an actual class or an event. This doesn’t need to take huge amounts of time.

It just needs to be consistent.

For example, imagine you take a bus every morning. So you put on your headsets, sit back in the bus and then go through the material.

The second step is to connect with other people.

The best example is with a small group.

If you don’t have a small group, you can access to our community.

After joining, you can find other people who are going through the course on Spiritual Gifts.

So what’s our big takeaway about spiritual gifts?

Gifts ha the same Greek word for “grace.”

The word is charisma.

We often think of “spiritual gifts” as our own capability.

But really it’s not about ability.

It’s about Grace for our sin.

Grace is a gift freely given to pay down debt from our sin.

When you look at your spiritual gifts from that perspective, when you see that their purpose is for us to feel grace and perhaps to enable others to experience the grace we all need from our sin, “spiritual gifts” take on another level and dimension.
