False Teachers Are Subtle And Plentiful
Sadly the warnings in Scripture against false teachers are more important than ever. Most people mistakenly believe these leaders are easy to identify
As I read the following Scriptures they depicted exactly my experience with a Pastor.
The Pastor acts nice. Smiles. References God. Prays.
But when it came time to act in a Scriptural way that actually proclaimed the Gospel instead of spiritualism....he didn’t and I realize now he couldn’t.
When a Pastor can’t face with grace and truth the sin in himself and in the flock...the healing will always be superficial.
It means the Pastor is trying to heal the person themselves, not by leading to hope found at the cross.
They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.” Jeremiah 6:14 NIV
Yet people can become attached to a Pastor like this because they get attention. They get a kind ear. They get free counseling.
This type of care is important. I don’t believe the answer is turning a a dead ear.
But at some point, the fake peace will result in a festered wound.
““Be wary of false preachers who smile a lot, dripping with practiced sincerity. Chances are they are out to rip you off some way or other. Don’t be impressed with charisma; look for character. Who preachers are is the main thing, not what they say. A genuine leader will never exploit your emotions or your pocketbook. These diseased trees with their bad apples are going to be chopped down and burned.” Matthew 7:15-20 MSG
Most people focus on the shiny pastors as the false preachers. And yes there should be concern is someone exploits your emotions or pocketbook.
The mistake is to focus in high profile hucksters.
Even the seemingly kind but secretly even unconsciously hurtful and prideful Pastor can do these things. And there is more damage because of the subtle nature.
It’s tricky. I know there are some of the flock overly critical with a malformed definition of Scriptural purity.
But having seen the potential devastation when poor teaching with prideful heart is mixed together.
