The Steps to Breakthrough

The Steps to Breakthrough

Today, I want to begin to layout the steps to allowing God to breakthrough in your life. Having a pathway will give you direction and hope.

The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. (Psalms 32:8)
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps. (Proverbs 16:9)

Finding your path and knowing the steps as they come from God and his Word

Step 1: Identify and name the kind of "Stuck" you really are in

I call out seven kinds of "Stuck." They may all seem to be the same.

But carefully looking at the words and their meaning can help you get greater clarity on how you really are stuck.

I find people often let their emotion and frustration cloud their thinking into the situation. But doing so will leave you in a fog and hamper action.

Spend the time to understand the kind of "Stuck" you really are on.

Step 2: Identify and name the Dead End Driver in your life

A car that has gone of the path and stuck in the mud had some kind of a "dead end driver" at the helm. Some set of decisions, circumstances, or combination therein caused that sequence of turns right into the mud.

What happens if that car gets unstuck, but the way the driver steers doesn't change?

Guess what: it won't be too long before that car is headed right back into another kind of "stuck."

Same with you. You have some "dead end drivers" steering your off the pathway.

Let's find out what that is!

Step 3: Activate Catalysts for Change

As we studied by looking at how David saw God breakthrough, there is some action each of us takes so that God can use us for his breakthrough.

Change and the catalysts for that change are a big part of the Bible's redemptive story.

We need to start to seek out, be open to, and ultimately submit to these catalysts if we want to experience breakthrough change.

Step 4: Beliefs for Breakthrough

If breakthrough just relied on our power, alone, then the process of breakthrough just becomes self-help.

But the message of the Gospel says that, ultimately, there is no real self-help.

Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to saving yourself, your true self. Mark 8:35

We need, then, to rely on God, his work within us and around us. It doesn’t mean passively doing nothing.  It means understanding his Word and obeying, perhaps doing the uncomfortable.  Those actions, however, all need to start with an understanding and relationship with Christ, because the breakthrough you need isn't going to be able to come from within yourself.

It starts with our belief, a true belief that inspires devotion.

Step 5: The Gospel: Grace and Go

The Gospel includes the receipt and giving of grace, and the boldness to go and take action in this world for the sake of the next.

Combining these two can give you the levers in your life to breakthrough.

Where do you need to receive and give grace?

Where do you need to go and act?
